The music scene is home to all walks of life. Rarely, musician’s embrace the “renaissance man” nature of being self-sufficient. Often reliant on a system of moving parts, their budget consists of hiring A&R, mastering engineers, affording studio time, and permitting others to handle their distribution.

Contrarily, there are the can-doers. The bold human beings that embrace all the roles in the process, becoming a one-stop shop, formidable machine. Sure, DIY is common. It’s an economical solution for a hardworking, confident risk-taker. To own this mindset, however, is a prophecy few fulfill.

Meet Justyn Michael Allen. Outstretching roots back to childhood, he cites his first experience with music was byway of piano lessons around age 8. The classic Suzuki-Beethoven-Christmas mixture of repertoire that beginners chew on for their first few years. Developing an interest in creating music of his own, he strayed away from the formalities of classical chess on his instrument. Curiously, Jay’s attention span led him to writing lyrics and repertoire that he could deem his.

The empowerment of the creator is precisely that — being able to proudly support a vision of self-manifestation. Juggling a noteworthy athletic career, work, and his passion for music in high school, Jay blossomed into an artist. After placing third in his region in track & field, Jay has experienced success beyond the 1s and 2s of recording.

Humility is a cornerstone of Jay’s sound. Infusing the likes of R&B, Hip-Hop, Soul, and West-Coast pop, Jay embodies the traits of modern production with tasteful nostalgia.

Primarily on his Instagram, Jay’s cultural impact is setting the tone for his remarkable development.

In an effort to project his music to a larger audience, Jay has begun to challenge himself weekly by posting drafts of his music every Wednesday. In an interview, Jay mentioned this as his tool to allow his music to be critiqued. His strength to publicize his art is a wall that many artists fail to conquer.
